I was near Kirkland this afternoon and my girlfriend suggested I stop by
St. Edward's State Park to go for a run there. There are about a dozen trails there, most only suitable for hiking and some open to biking as well. When I looked at the trail map, it became apparent that the trails were not very long, each one less than a mile. Because it was raining all day long, the
trails were very muddy and I had to walk down some downhill portions. Running uphill was easier and there was a trail that went up approximately 400 feet which got my heart beating pretty fast. It ended up being a short run. The terrain is similar to
Discovery Park--very green with ferns and various deciduous and coniferous trees--which I find more beautiful, and it has longer trails.
An intriguing part of the park is a former Catholic seminary which is huge (90,000 sq. ft.!) and looks pretty spectacular from an architectural standpoint (it definitely has a Spanish influence). I found
this article from Seattle Post-Intelligencer about its history and possible plans for the future. Very interesting...
