Rode to work today. It's been a long time. Before I left, I thankfully noticed that there was a leak in the rear tire of my old Volkscycle. The ride was tough, but it felt good to be back on the road again.

Garmin Training Center Map Feature and Google Earth

The Garmin Training Center software that comes with the Forerunner 305 is pretty good. You can categorize the workouts you uploaded by the type of activity (running, bicycling, other), you can customize workouts and courses (haven't tried it yet), and look at all of it on a map.

The problem with the map feature is that it sucks. I can understand why, however. If it were really good, the software would have to be much larger, plus--and probably more importantly--Garmin decided that they can't compete with Google Earth and Google Maps. And so the good news is that, you can right-click on any of your recorded workouts in Training Center and choose "View xxx in Google Earth".

The map is obviously much more detailed and as far as I can tell, the Forerunner 305 is very accurate, only occasionally missing my route by a feet or two.

Playa del Carmen; Mt. Rainier

It's been almost a year since my last entry so I thought I'd put something in before then. I haven't been running or biking a lot since the 2007 Boston Marathon. I'm slowly starting to exercise a little more-- 2 or 3 mile runs here and there. Gear-wise, I got new shoes, this time I'm trying out a pair of New Balance neutrals, and the Forerunner 305 which is awesome because I no longer have problems with reception in tree-covered areas.

The most exciting trips so far this year were to Playa del Carmen Mexico in January where we didn't exercise much except for a few swims, and to Mt. Rainier only a week ago. There was so much precipitation and cold temperatures this winter and spring that there's still too much snow to comfortably walk on trails without snow shoes. We saw people skiing down the slopes! We stayed at the newly opened Paradise Inn--the rooms are small and not very sound-proof, but the early 1900s architecture is awesome and I hope to go back there later in the summer.
