Finally I found a different run! It's called Green Lake :-). For those unfamiliar with Seattle, it's a very popular artificial lake on the north side and today, even with the weather at 40 degrees and very windy, there were many people there walking and running as it was getting dark. The scenery is very nice as most of the time all you see is the lake, but there are moments were a road with lots of traffic comes close to the walking/running trail. Still I liked it a lot and ran twice around the lake for a total of about 5.68 miles. I think it was closer to 5.8 or 5.9 because I lost the signal for a couple of minutes after I made a pit stop (that was inside a small building). I'm attaching a zoomed-out map that shows the position of Green Lake with respect to the larger Seattle area.

I decided to make it two exercise days in a row (getting sick of the knee problem) and so went cycling because there was only a 30% chance of rain with the temperature at about 50 degrees. I did the familiar loop through Discovery Park but made a detour to the marina. I felt good and iced the knee and took a pain killer again after the ride (much less pain and swelling than when running).

On a side note, I've been thinking about getting the new Garmin Edge 305, a GPS gadget designed specifically for biking. The advantages over the Forerunner 201--which I currently use--is that it's much more sensitive to GPS signals thus reducing 'blackout' problems and it has both heart rate and cadence monitors. I haven't had much problems with the signal while biking (more so when running in parks with dense tree cover) except for occasional mishaps when riding through the downtown area, which I don't do that often. So really the advantage would be the cadence and heart rate monitors. However, that would cause me to use separate devices for running and biking. Because the software is different for both, I couldn't combine the results. I think for now I'll stick with what I have. Perhaps the Forerunner 305 is worth considering in the future as it also has the new sensitive antenna and has an optional cadence accessory available.

An Elliot Bay run today. I bought a knee strap (Pro Tec Patellar Tendon Strap from REI) yesterday that Livestrongrrrl told me about. She saw a person at her gym running with it who told her that it really helps. Now, according to the aforementioned Web site, it helps with the following symptoms:

Help alleviate symptoms of tendinitis, chondromalacia, iliotibial band syndrome, Osgood-Schlatter's disease, and other knee ailments with this strap.
The patellar tendon strap is useful for alleviating moderate knee pain, especially in areas under and surrounding the knee cap
Provides compression on the patellar tendon, helping spread pressure uniformly, reducing discomfort and irritation
Compression may also help stabilize your patella, improving its tracking
Absorbs stress to the knee, reducing vibrations in the femoral groove
Neoprene strap attaches with a VELCRO® brand closure for an adjustable fit For proper fit, measure circumference of leg just below kneecap: Small fits 10 - 12 inches; Medium 14-1/8 - 13-5/8 inches; Large 13-3/4 - 15-1/2 inches; X-large 15-5/8 - 17-1/2 inches. Made in USA.

I really don't know if this will help me because I haven't seen a doctor yet, but it's worth a try. After the run, I iced my knee for half an hour and took a couple of Aleve tablets. I'll try running a couple of times a week to see if this works.

I finally made it to the gym--only the second time this year. I bought new cycling shoes last week: Pearl Izumi Juice, compatible with both SPDs and LOOKs (and SPD-SLs). I got them because the only bike with LOOK pedals at the gym was replaced with SPD pedals. Apparently not enough people (probably mainly myself) were using it and it was left idle during full classes. No problem there. So with the SPD clips on them I went to a spin class and it went very well. A good class and I'm not totally out of shape. I jogged to the gym and back (and the knee felt fine).

So, the knee is not a 100% as I had a slight but noticable pain today after about a 4.5mile run along Elliot Bay [no pain yesterday after a mile run back from work]. I plant to run again in a few days to test it out again, but it doesn't look good, at least for now. I plan on icing it after each run and possibly buying a knee brace. I'm going to try cycling later this week to see if the knee hurts while I bike. I'm betting it won't because it felt fine when I biked at the gym.

It's been a week since the last exercise and it was a nice day, so I put on my running gear, which today included tights, gloves, a hat, and a new wind jacket designed for cycling--that's because it was about 35 degrees with high gusts. Not a big deal, but I was still stupefied when I saw a guy running in shorts without a t-shirt. Apparently his large fat reserve was sufficient to preserve warmth.

Today was a mere test to see if my left knee had healed. I can't say for sure that it has although there wasn't any pain before, during, or after the run (nor was there any a week ago). It still feels a little uncomfortable somehow. I think it's possible the sensation may be more psychological than anything else.

I plan on going tomorrow again. We'll see...

The Olympics start today in Torino. In the spirit of the Olympics, last night I decided to go speed skiing--my first time ever. The weather called for a sunny forecast and 50 degrees in Seattle, which would probably translate to 35 degrees in the mountains.

The trail I chose is called the Iron Horse Trail and the John Wayne Pioneer Trail. It's off exit 54 on I-90 in the Cascade Mountains (I took my GPS device :-). The exit numbers correspond to miles so it's only about an hour away from downtown Seattle depending on traffic. I tried this trail a year ago with cross country skis of which I own a pair. It's a flat course--which makes it good for speed skiing. Some people from work had recently gone speed skiing and I thought I'd try it. I knew it wouldn't be that difficult for me because the movement is somewhat similar to inline and ice skating. And as I mentioned, I've cross-country skied before. Actually, I wonder if in the Olympics the cross-country skiers use speed skis. The difference between the two is that speed skis are shorter than cross-country skis, the boots are a bit stiffer I think, the poles are a bit longer and the movement is side-to-side versus mostly straight.

I started out a bit shaky and fell down a couple of times. The surface was a bit icy in shady areas and had frozen ski marks from other skiers. I knew it was going to be windy; in fact, when I checked the weather before I left there was a wind advisory. As I got to the opening of the trail by the east side of Keechelus Lake, the wind was blowing very hard and really slowed me down. And so it took me an hour and a half to get to the end of the trail. It's not really the end of the road, but the point where the trail intersects a snowmobile road about 7.75 miles from the start.

The way back was a lot easier, but I was dehydrated and so frequently stopped to eat snow, which was very good :-). I should have taken an energy bar or gel with me too. I got back in just over 3 hours. I still need a lot more practice to be comfortable, although I felt great when it wasn't windy and I could push it up to about 8-10mph. I had my iPod Nano with me and that made it even more fun. My only disappointment was not seeing almost any wild life along the trail. I only saw a few crows and what might have been a hawk flying high close to the finish. However, there were a couple of recent animal tracks on the snow along the trail. Perhaps I shouldn't be disappointed as the trail is close to a highway and I know there is lots of wild life in Mt. Raineer National Park.

One more thing: I tore away some of the skin on the inner sides of my feet. The problem had happened to me previously during rollerblading which I mitigated by puting tape around the affected areas. I'll do that next time I go speed skiing, which I hope to do again this year as there has been plenty of snow in the mountains.

Well, it's been a couple of weeks since the last work out. I went to Livestrongrrrrl's gym in NYC. I did light stretches prior to a 5k run on the treadmill. I ran at a slow pace, 7.0mph, on purpose as this was just a test run to see how the knee is doing. No pain, but a very slight tingly sensation afterwards. So again, I'll take it easy the next couple of weeks to hopefully assure a full recovery.
