I finally got out my bike again! It was a short ride and very enjoyable. Went from Belltown to Magnolia - Discovery Park - Ballard - Fremont and back home.

At the Government Locks (also known as the Hiram M. Chittenden or Ballard Locks),, located between Discovery Park and Ballard), I saw a HUGE leisure boat that was waiting to leave from the ship canal to Puget Sound. It looked like one of Paul Allen's boats.

08/29/06 Note: I forgot to mention that while I biked through Discovery Park--and the bike path goes very close to the running trail at the southern end of the park--I didn't smell the anything from the sewage treatment plant.

I went to Discovery Park for a late evening run around the ~2.9 mile loop around the park. I really like running there because the path takes you to the edge of a cliff from which you can get a spectacular view of Puget Sound. The sun was low in the sky and the view was spectacular as it usually is from that viewpoint but I forgot to take my cell phone and didn't get a picture.

The only problem with the run was that there was a pretty strong smell coming from the sewage treatment plant which is located at the bottom of the park. The only time I've smelled it before was when I went to the lighthouse at the tip of the park. Anyway, the northerly winds must have carried the smell all the way up the hill to the southern part of the park.

The GPS reception was poor because it was very green in the forested parts of the park. Maybe it's time to upgrade to the Forerunner 305...

I went for a jog with my girlfriend around Seward Park. Her knee was hurting a bit like mine does sometimes so we went slow. In cases like that it's good to ice it down, take pills and avoid running for a couple of days.

It was 85 today in Seattle so I went to the beach at Golden Gardens. It was pretty crowded but nobody wanted to swim! Probably because the temperature was only about 55 degrees. I felt hot so I jumped in twice. Last year I could only stay in the water about 15 seconds. But today it didn't feel that cold and I swam for two or three minutes. There was lots of seaweed right by the shore, but further out it wasn't bad. The wind wasn't really as loud as in the movie (the camera microphone is very sensitive):

Went for another run by Elliot Bay. I felt better today but the run was harder because I ended up running along Elliot Ave. instead of through Myrtle Edwards Park. That's because the Seattle Hempfest is on this weekend. I didn't mind except for a little bit of gas fumes along the road (it's very busy).

I think I'm getting out of shape. I ran 10k today and it was an effort even though I was going at a pretty slow pace, maybe 7:30 min./mi. The good news is that I didn't use my knee brace and my knee didn't hurt at all.

I went for a 2-day trip to Mt. Rainier National Park with my girlfriend. We went up to the Sunrise visitor center/area located at 6400 feet! Needless to say, the drive up is spectacular. Once there, we camped a mile and change from Sunrise near a meadow. The first day we hiked up to Mt. Fremont at almost 7200 feet and the second day to Mt. Dege at around 7000 feet. I'll have pictures up in the next couple of days. These hikes were the most scenic I've ever been on. Most of the trails are surrounded by meadows full of flowers and pine trees. It was very green all around us at this subalpine climate, but above us where ridges full of snow, particularly the big one: Mt. Rainier.

9,047 Ft. of Climbing!

This is the route: a small gravel parking lot right by Crystal Mtn. Blvd. & Route 410 just before the Mt. Rainier National Park boundry, to the Paradise visitor center on on Mt. Rainier. Total distance: 81 miles. Total elevation gain: +9,047 ft.

This was definitely my toughest ride ever. I went with a group of 8 other people. We left Seattle at about 8:30 and strated biking at 10:30. The whole route is either up or down--there are virtually no flat spots. We started at about 2700 ft. and immediately started climbing up to Cayuse Pass at 4675 ft. The group got split up on the climb but not that badly. I was breathing hard the first 15 minutes or so, but felt great after that. We stopped at the top and then headed down Rt. 123 all the way to the park entry fee point (2180 ft.) at the intersection of Stevens Canyon Rd. (a.k.a. Rt. 706). Acutally we flew down this hill, and all the other ones throughout the day, at 35mph+. My maximum speed was 49.9mph and there was a woman with us that was even faster! The trick is to not pedal too much and get in an aerodynamic tuck.

This was about 20 miles in. The next 5 miles were uphill, then 5 miles downhill. We made a couple more stops. From there it was all uphill to the top. I don't know exactly when, but I think with about 7 miles to go, I was feeling very good and I took off from the pack. I pushed very hard, going at about 10mph, and got to the Jackson Visitor Center at Paradise at least 10 minutes before the next three or four people. It took a lot out of me, but I recovered after eating soup and a grilled-cheese. We spent a while there, at least an hour or more, then back down again.

The way back down was easier, except for the last 10 mile climb up to Cayuse Pass. One guy took off and I tried to catch up with him, but could not, and I gave it all I had. He got there 3 minutes before I did, and the next group came 10 minutes later. Now that climb really shook me up, and I didn't really recover from the ride until today!

I will do this ride again. It's simply awesome.

One note about the weather: it was cloudy and drizzling for the first 20 miles. At the park entry fee point, it was sunny and warm all the sudden. But when we started climbing again, the clouds and rain returned. That first 10-mile downhill was very wet and somewhat dangerous, but on the way back from Paradise, it wasn't as bad. Actually all-in-all, we were fortunate because it would have been much tougher to climb 9,000 ft. if it were sunny and hot. The only negative aspect of it was that we didn't get one single clear view of Mt. Rainier. However, there were many lookout points down into the valleys on the ascents/descents. BTW, we could see big patches of snow at Paradise probably only one or two thousand feet higher.

On supplies: I didn't take a spare tube with me, but will consider it next time because one of the guys had a really bad flat the last time he rode the route and couldn't finish it (the roads are generally in good condition but there are a few holes and uneven pavement). At the advice of one of the riders I took a lightweight water-resistant jacket with me which I put in the backpocket of my shirt: without it I would have gotten extremely cold on the downhills. I was shivering at one point with it on! With respect to food, I didn't take enough with me. I was fine up to Paradise, but had to purchase cookies and Gatorade at the grill there which were very overpriced. I'll take an energy drink powder with me next time, which is what a couple other guys did.

It's been a week since my last ride so today I went for a longer ride--it turned out to be just over 50 miles and consisted of a half-loop of Lake Washington with a loop around Seward Park and a pass through Medina.

I felt great and the weather was great. This time I actually managed to get through without eating anything during the ride. All I had were 2 bottles with Powerade, one of which I refilled with water. I had a pretty big breakfast about 45 minutes before I started riding. Normally I'd prefer to wait 2 hours, but it didn't bother me. One thing I will say though, if I haven't said so before, is that water by itself doesn't do it. I don't believe in the effectiveness of those performance pills which are advertised in Bicycling and other magazines, nor would I use them, but Gatorade or Powerade helps out a lot.

A Great First Year

My first post on this blog was on August 5, 2005. It's been a great year--the highlights were the Seattle and Vancouver marathons, the STP, and three cycling races. My total mileage was about 2150 miles. BTW, I think it'll be difficult to beat July mileage-wise.
